One example is the aluminum atom (Al), which can lose three electrons to become a cation with a charge of Al³+. Ionic compounds, such as potassium iodide (KI) and lithium carbonate (Li₂CO3), are formed through the combination of a metal and a nonmetal or a polyatomic ion.
