Understanding Mole Fraction in Chemistry

What is a mole fraction and how is it calculated?

Mole Fraction Explanation

A mole fraction is the proportion between the moles of one component in a solution or mixture and the total moles of all the components. It is used in chemistry to describe the amount of a specific substance in a mixture.

Mole Fraction Calculation

In order to calculate the mole fraction of a component in a mixture, you divide the moles of that component by the total moles of all components in the mixture. Mathematically, it can be expressed as:

Mole Fraction (X) = Moles of Component / Total Moles in Mixture
