The Splitting of Israel After King Solomon's Death

History of Israel After King Solomon's Death

King Solomon reigned over Israel from around 970–931 BCE. He succeeded his father David and was known for his wisdom, as well as being a prolific writer of several books in the Bible, including Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.

After King Solomon's death, his son Rehoboam ascended to the throne. Unfortunately, Rehoboam's poor leadership and failure to address the concerns of the Northern and Southern Israelites led to the splitting of the kingdom into two separate entities: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.

This division of Israel into two kingdoms had significant consequences for the region, as it marked a period of political and religious upheaval. The northern kingdom of Israel would eventually fall to the Assyrians in 722 BCE, while the southern kingdom of Judah survived for an additional few centuries before succumbing to the Babylonian Empire in 586 BCE.
