For this activity, you are going to be designing a road map of the heart. It will be just like a geographical map that identifies cities, towns, dirt roads, highways, mountains, and rivers, but your map will identify structural names, pulmonary and systemic circulation, as well as the conduction system.

Step 1: Label a Heart

Using an image of an anatomically correct heart found through an internet search, stock footage, or that you create by hand, do the following:

  • Draw and label all of the structures you learned about in Unit 8.
  • It will be up to you to determine which labels to use for each section.
  • Use straight lines pointing to your label or use a numbering system to identify the labeled areas.
  • Use arrows to demonstrate the direction in which blood flows through pulmonary and systemic circulation.
  • Distinguish between pulmonary and systemic circulation in some way (such as two different colors).
  • Draw and label the conductivity as it passes through the heart using directional arrows and a labeling system of your choosing.

Step 2: What to Submit

In a format of your choice (word processing document, slide presentation, poster, etc.), include all labels and drawings as outlined in Step 1. Draw and label the structures of the heart, demonstrating pulmonary and systemic circulation with differentiation and include the coronary circulation system. Map out the heart's conduction system, and present the information in an organized format such as a document or presentation.

Differentiate pulmonary and systemic circulation pathways, using contrasting colors or symbols to distinguish them.

Pulmonary circulation refers to the flow of blood between the heart and lungs, while systemic circulation refers to the flow of blood between the heart and the rest of the body.
